About Luiza Milewicz

Luiza is an Australian contemporary light artist working from her home studio in the Sutherland Shire, Sydney, where she creates unique and limited-edition illuminating sculptures. Like a moth to a flame, Luiza has been drawn to the medium of light ever since her studies at the University of New South Wales Art & Design, in the field of textile and jewellery design, where she was introduced to optical fibres and LEDs. In 2005, she completed her Master of Design degree, which explored the use of lighting technologies in wearable accessories, and the resulting body of work led to the creation of her first illuminated pieces. From flickering coloured LED resin pendants and sleek luminous metal surfaces of her illuminating bags, to the more malleable use of glowing fibre optics designed to be worn in dance performances, Luiza produced a unique language for adorning the body.

While her early works focused on the portability of light, later works evolved into a visual and sensory style of architectural ornamentation. Specifically, it was her exploration of weaving fibre optics that resulted in larger-scale chandelier pieces. These works intended to produce the more sculptural qualities of form and light combined, where straight, wavy, and sculpted lengths of optical fibre revealed linear, broken, and changing rhythms of light through the use of intelligent lighting.

The development of the chandeliers led to opportunities for establishing LM Designs (2010-2013), which was a small co-operative artisanal company specialising in the design and creation of avant-garde bespoke and limited-edition sculptural lighting for exhibitions, commissions, and retail with a focus on preserving the tradition of fine craftsmanship.

Since 2013, Luiza has expanded her repertoire of experience to teaching art and design in various academic and non-academic settings, including high-schools, after-school classes, and specialised workshops for all ages. More recently, a focus on family (with two small children) has shifted her attention back to her own practice at her home studio as an artist using light, where she continues to develop works inspired from observations in nature and geometry. Evoking micro/macro organisms and universal shapes, the current works investigate the potential of geometry and it’s symbolic meaning through an abstract visual language that celebrates colour, pattern, movement and form, inspiring a deeper connection with life’s journey and its mystery.

Luiza’s works are simultaneously decorative and functional, thereby crossing boundaries between art and product design. It is the synthesis of art and craft disciplines, lighting technologies as well as industrial materials and techniques that work together to create Luiza’s unique and individualised sculptures where each light becomes and object of beauty and function.
