About Luiza Milewicz

Luiza Milewicz is a contemporary artist working with light, geometry, and material systems. Born in Poland and raised in Australia from the age of six, she is now based in The Netherlands. Her practice is known for limited-edition illuminated sculptures that engage perception, space, and contemplative experience.

Her engagement with light began during her studies at UNSW Art & Design, where she was first introduced to optical fibres and LED technologies. After completing a Master of Design in 2005, she began experimenting with illumination in wearable and performative contexts. Early works included LED resin pendants, luminous metal forms, and fibre-optic elements developed for dance and movement, establishing a foundation for a practice centred on light as both material and language.

Initially focused on the portability of light, Milewicz’s work gradually expanded into larger-scale sculptural and architectural forms. Chandelier-like works emerged through the weaving of fibre optics, producing rhythmic, spatial compositions that balanced ornamentation with structure. This period led to the founding of LM Designs (2010–2013), an artisanal studio specialising in sculptural lighting for exhibitions and commissioned projects, where fine craftsmanship remained central.

Alongside her studio practice, Milewicz has worked extensively in art and design education. In recent years, her work has shifted toward a more contemplative investigation of light as an energetic and perceptual force. Drawing on geometry, natural pattern formation, and spatial awareness, her sculptures explore the relationships between energy, matter, and experience. The works operate at the intersection of art and design, remaining visually refined while inviting reflection, stillness, and attention.
